World-class paintings and unique atmosphere all in a breathtaking building in the heart of the city. From Italian renaissance masters to contemporary art, you can find everything in one of Hamburg’s most beautiful museums, the Kunsthalle.
As I moved to Hamburg, one of the first things I did — besides going to Ikea, obviously — was visiting the Kunsthalle. Alongside the permanent collection the institution also organises annual temporary exhibitions, worthy of the fame of the largest museums worldwide. The latest protagonist of such a special exhibition was one of my favourite painters, Thomas Gainsborough. So no wonder I visited the exhibitions two times already. I am in such a privileged position to be part of the “Friends of the Kunsthalle” Society — courtesy of my beloved husband. This gives me the opportunity to visit the museum as many times as I wish during a year for a one-time fee. My office is quite close to the gallery, so sometimes when I am thirsty for some beautiful art I just find myself in the lunch break wandering in front of Renoire and Cézanne.
As you approach this marvellous construction you can already feel that herein incredible things must await you. The building is situated close to Lake Alster in the chicest part of the Hamburger inner city. After you climb a few steps up to the museum you feel yourself small and humble under its magnificent façade, decorated with sculptures of famous artists, such as Hans Memlin, Albrecht Dürer or Hans Holbein.
After entering the foyer, you are welcomed by the impressive golden sculpted staircase and the marble hall. From there you start your journey through time and space; discovering some of the world’s most beautiful artworks.
I would like to make you acquainted with my favourite paintings from their collection. I have to admit that I much appreciate renaissance and impressionist masters, but above all: flowers and all the pretty stuff.
